The History of XJ, The Conflict, The Ending, The Legend

The History of XJ, The Conflict, The Ending, The Legend
Status: Complete

The Conflict:
First let’s cite a passage from “The Legend of Crazy Boys: Creators of Xian Jian:
When Xian Jian was in development, Yao Zhuang Xian 姚壮宪 (widely accepted as father of Xian Jian, he was in charge of the plot, the programming, even to the art and music) and Xie Chong Hui 谢崇辉 (the co-creator, artist who wrote the dialogues, poems and the mazes design) had an argument with the ending. Yao suggested that when Ling Er sacrifice herself to stop the Water Beast, her body would be destroyed and her soul would be plugged into Yue Ru’s body. This thought quickly received objection from Xie and whether or not it worked…well watch the ending and you will see.

The Ending:
So Yao’s plan was:
Ling Er’s physical body destroyed, soul remained.
Yue Ru’s soul shattered, body preserved.

In other words, the ending we are left with Yue Ru in the snow under the tree was actually Ling Er’s carrying her daughter waiting for Xiao Yao's return.
Of course due to Xie, this fact was never indicated in the game and the players could never know. But upon rethinking through the details it is not a stretch for players to accepted that this is the true ending… from naming Yi Ru, to Sheng Gu’s dialogue about Yue Ru’s condition to the “farewell” in Xiao Yao’s dream, we know Yue Ru is not coming back.

The Aftermath:
The results from Xian Jian was a surprise to Yao, he did not plan to do a sequel right away. According to him, he wanted to leave players room for reminiscence and to think beyond. For the ending of Xian Jian deeply touched our emotions while still contained bits of ambiguities.

At this point it is clear that Xie is on the Pro-Yue Ru side while Yao is on the Pro-Ling Er side, but it certainly wasn’t clear that the feelings they each had for their own character was the reason for Xian Jian 2’s failure.

Xian Jian 2:
Xie was the head designer for NewPal, and it was visible that Yue Ru plotline received more spotlight and became more polished. The original Xian Jian 2 plotline used in the teasers was designed by Xie, and as we all know, it was not the same as the one the players got in the game years later. This time the objection was from Yao, and his objection was to the entire New Crazy Boys staff assembled by Xie to make Xian Jian 2. At this time, the original music composer Lin Kun Xin 林坤信 had left SoftStar (大宇). So in the end Xian Jian 2 was only half complete before Xie also left SoftStar while taking some members of the Crazy Boys team with him. The team that made Xian Jian is now left with only a name, a legend. Later on, the DOMO team decided to “save” the series by taking on the unfinished Xian Jian 2, combined with the help of Yao fixing and adjusting the plot based on what’s already done, what the players recieved was a barely passing, mediocre game. Yao knew Xian Jian 2 is not going to sell well on the market, thus he quits game designing and enters the field of management.

The Legend:
Thus, Xian Jian 1’s 3 leaders.
Programming and Creation: Yao Zhung Xian
Script and Planning: Xie Chong Hui
Music and Sound: Lin Kun Xin
All left video game making business, the perfect Xian Jian 1 became a legend, there wouldn’t be another Xian Jian game that will trump it.

Ling Vs Yue
Here in artistic designing involved a “role play-into” concept. While developing, Yao and Xie each leaned towards Ling Er (Yao) and Yue Ru (Xie). They had different view on emotion, and their disagreement led to the eventual failure of Xian Jian 2, not to mention disbanding the Crazy Boys game development team. However, base on the ending, it seems that Xie has won the Ling Vs Yue fight. Yao wasn’t able to revive Ling Er, and had to accept Xie’s “Yue Ru-revived” plot for Xian Jian 2.

Rethink back...
Xie actually did the right thing by opposing the ending Yao originally set. At that time, all of us playing on the computer were still youngsters in their teens, Yao’s certain experience in myth and culture, combining with the relatively complicated set of feelings that was in the original ending made it impossible for us to understand at that age. The truth cannot be pointed out, not at that time, not at that place…

However, things are different now. Time passed, we all matured, understood the cultural backgrounds, and experienced with complex feelings and emotions. Looking back at Yao’s original setting, only to see how epic and beautiful the true ending is.

Chinese Paladin

Today, those who scold the drama version (Chinese Paladin) were primarily the old players; the new players enjoyed it more. That is because the old Xian Jian triggers our memories of youth, something that cannot be replaced.

To tell the truth, Chinese Paladin isn’t that bad. It is very possible that many new versions of Chinese Paladin will surface later on. Maybe ten, or twenty years later this first version will get to sit on the same throne with the 1983 version of “The Legend of the Condor Heroes”. It will start off the “video game-wu xia” genre, making Chinese Paladin the first title, worthy of the same classic status as Xian Jian, the game that started the Chinese RPG genre.

Poetry and Music:

The poetry within the game deserve some mention. In the DOS version of Xian Jian, only the “Butterfly Love” 《蝶恋》 poem was written by Lin, the rest were all by Xie.

The background music used when Xiao Yao was thinking about Yue Ru was widely mistaken as 《蝶恋》 because it felt similar to it, even though the real title is actually 《来世再续未了缘》. (I can’t translate the title, but for those who know what it says they will know that it fits with the original ending.) Ling Er’s rebirth, and Yue Ru’s departure.

Some people thought Chinese Paladin started the battle between Ling and Yue, some thought Xian Jian did. In reality, it started way before…from the conflict between the two game developers.

Ten years passed... Ten years...
Using a line said by Yue Ru Chinese Paladin:
Can’t believe I’m this old already. 想不到,我已经这么老了。

Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan:
It was, after all, Yao’s first time taking on a “big game” project. His constant lonely, single-sided affection in his private life prior to this made him put all his desire and passion for a better love life inside the game, creating the stubborn Li Xiao Yao. He had put in too much personal emotion into the story. Whether the characters are happy, sad, separated, or united were all based on Yao’s view on love. Because of this, any script or scene that does not match his opinion were rejected and fixed.

In the game, Ling Er design and lifestyle were made by Yao to practically be his perfect soulmate. Yao’s influence was indeed the greatest in the first version, but Xie, who was responsible for the script was slowly and obviously tilting the favor towards Yue Ru. (In the original script, you can see Yue Ru’s character began getting more and more focused on. Her involvement was even stronger in the DOS version of the game. In NewPal Yue Ru’s position in some instances even surpassed Ling Er. We can see even Xie liked Yue Ru more and more as time goes, just like all the fans.) I am guessing that Xie also involved his experience and feelings into Yue Ru. It was shown in NewPal and Xian Jian 2, both made by The New Crazy Boys team led by Xie (left SoftStar halfway through XJ2) and both games bended in Yue Ru’s favor.

While making the DOS version (including the 95 and 98 version since they are pretty much the same), Yao had the greatest influence, that is why the DOS ending contains his “true ending”. However, Xie manages to change history, the ending in NewPal was the revival of Yue Ru, and because Xie started Xian Jian 2, the fact that Yue Ru was the one revived became canon. However, after Xie left, Yao changed the original script. The official game that came out only cast a shadow on the revived Yue Ru; instead, Yao had made his desire of a revived Ling Er appear as a mysterious voice in the final battle that helped the protagonists. Nevertheless, Yue Ru was the one revived in the ending. Nothing can be changed there.

Xian Jian was successful because the two developers each favors one female protagonist, each put in their deepest emotion.

Thank you Mr. Yao for during your love lost you created Xian Jian, giving us Li Xiao Yao and Zhao Ling Er
Thank you Mr. Xie for during your planning you created Lin Yue Ru that shines alongside Zhao Ling Er.
Thank you Mr. Lin for creating the music that influences the plot, changing the Butterfly side quest to a main quest.
Thank you Crazy Boys staff for deleting a big part of story after Yue Ru’s death, thus able to leave discussion for LiLin and LiZhao instead of Yao’s original intent on a single Li+Zhao love story. Giving equals to Ling and Yue.
Thank you Li Yong Jin (the head of SoftStar) for your support so the players were able to play Xian Jian.

The Poem:
The Ending Poem for DOS Version Xian Jian
不识情愁枉少年,
檐下赠酒结仙缘。
情难消受美人恩,
仗剑江湖为红颜。
The Ending Poem for 95 Version Xian Jian
翩翩潇洒美少年,
灵岛求药结仙缘。
千里崎岖不辞苦,
仗剑江湖为红颜。
Very clear that the DOS version poem fits better to Yue Ru, and it also works with Ling Er. The first two lines even mentioned the scene where Xiao Yao gave wine to the Drunken Sword Master that started this whole thing, the latter two lines work well with all three female protagonists, it’s a very well crafted piece. The ending poem in the 95 version and beyond however completely erased Xiao Yao and Yue Ru’s relationship, leaving just the message of Xiao Yao going over many obstacles for Ling Er, overall it is inferior to the original poem.

The Music:
I’m standing neutral in this, but the fact is, Yue Ru music had always trumped Ling Er music a little both in Xian Jian and in Chinese Paladin.
We all know that Yao and Xie fought over the two female protagonists for quite some time. But at least the music creator Lin Kun Xin remained somewhere middle, but Yue Ru’s main theme 《来世再续未了缘》 sounded like another version of 《蝶恋》 which made it just as classic and symbolic, not to mention the lively tune of 《比武招亲》 also made it easy to distinguish and remember. Ling Er’s themes were 《情愿(怨)》《魂牵梦绕》《盟誓》《雨》 which all appeared separately which made it not as memorable.
In Chinese Paladin is almost the same. Ling Er’s themes were 《六月的雨》《让爱》《君莫悲》 《红色蒲公英》 which were all good, but somehow they just weren’t able to beat a simple, yet tear-inducting Yue Ru theme song 《一直很安静》.
Even though Ling Er has the quantity, Yue Ru got the quality. I’m guessing that Lin and the people responsible for the music in the drama were influenced by Yao’s favor of Ling Er, ergo Ling Er received more songs. Sadly, because Yue Ru has fewer songs, they in turns appear more often and usually at more special/touching moments. But that’s not to say Ling Er songs aren't any good, they are, but it just that every time the scene changes, another song is used, listening to it once won’t have much of an impact. In the end, 《蝶恋》and 《一直很安静》 became the widely accepted, symbolic music for Xian Jian.
On another note, the actual Xian Jian theme song is suppose to be 《情愿(怨)》 (the song played in the Demon Tower when Xiao Yao remembered Ling Er), this song was also the Ling Er theme, which fits Yao’s initial plan of the game being Li+Zhao main story while the rest being side story. 《蝶恋》 and Yue Ru cannot be separated. Through Yue Ru’s words during the butterfly scene already foreshadowed her end. The song played when Xiao Yao dreamed about Yue Ru had an official name of 《来世再续未了缘》 but it’s just a remix of 《蝶恋》. In addition, no one can argue that butterfly side quest and Ling Er have truly zero connection. She simply wasn’t involved.
PS: In the third version of the original script, the entire butterfly scene was intended to be a side quest that can be discarded just like the Peach Blossom Village side quest. However because of Lin’s 《蝶恋》 raised the entire quality of the butterfly side quest, allowing Yue Ru to reach the same importance as Ling Er in Xiao Yao’s heart, and the promise of “吃到老,玩到老”. The final draft of the butterfly side quest made Xie and some of the other Crazy Boys staff that liked Yue Ru, to oppose Yao’s original idea. Yue Ru became part of the main story, reaching the effect of Ling Yue equality which made Xian Jian a classic.
Mr. Lin said:
“A number of songs were made before the planning and the story were even finished.”
《一直很安静》, sang by 阿桑, also came out before Chinese Paladin, what a coincidence. Just like 《蝶恋》, a song that changed Xian Jian, 《一直很安静》 a song that changed Chinese Paladin, making the character Yue Ru more touching, and more moving.

well... while personally I don't accept that Johnsen Yau and Marty Hsieh are huge fans of either of the female characters in PAL (basically Marty more or less ruined Yueru in both his novel and NewPAL, and that part which XY fighted a faked Yueru which he added in NewPAL just sounded extremely weird and cliched), it's still possible as Marty's style is more close to the traditional Wuxia (which is definately Yueru's style), and Johnsen's style is more mythic than Wuxia (which is definately Ling'er's style). :)

nice work on translation though :)

In NewPal when you went back in time 10 years ago you will get to fight the Demon Witch boss again, but this time she will lose to you...When she loses she will turn into Yue Ru and try to confuse Xiao Yao.

I think that was it, recalling from memory.

Who is this demon witch? Did they fight her in the present? And 10 years ago means when XY touch the statue of Ling'ers mom and travels with her underwater?

Sorry, I'm just a little lost and it's been a while since I've last played (only played the dos/95 version)

well there was a part which was XY's dream before he was waken up by his aunt in the beginning in NewPAL, in the dream he fought a monster which closely resembled his aunt (her weapon also looked like a pot - in PAL Win95 version this part was a cutscene, but in NewPAL it's playable). Then after LE's mother suicided with the water demon (in DOS/Win95 version XY will go to the first village after that), he will revisit that monster which looked like his aunt and beat her (in the process, she turned into Yueru to confuse XY).
