Not so well-known facts

Postby Chibi Jennifer » Sat Jun 07, 2008 9:30 am

Wan Mei of Crystallized was kind enough to help translate some articles for me regarding Chinese Paladin and I wanted to share it with you all =D
Thanks Wan Mei for the birthday present! If anyone else knows of not-so-well known facts, please do share!

1. “The Father of Chinese Paladin” Yau Zhuang-Xian personally visited the sets several times and offer his input to the TV adaptation.
2. Yau Zhung-Xian strongly recommended that the role of Zhao Ling’er to be given to Liu Yifei. For him there’s no other choice for Ling’er.
3. Nicholas Tse, Jimmy Lin and Vic Chou were auditioned for the role of Li Xiaoyao, but then Yau saw Hu Ge on the set and picked him.

BTW, there's won't have been a 'Li Yiru' if Johnson Yau Zhung-Xian didn't win the argument and let Ling'er be the one pregnant instead of Yueru.
In 1995, the Chinese Paladin team basically was split into two camps:
CP1 Designer Johnson Yau is pro-Ling’er :) His is the dominant camp.
CP1 Planner Marty Hsieh is pro-Yueru.

However chief Graphic Artist Jovin Lin sided with Marty Hsieh on rejecting Johnson Yau’s proposed ending for Ling’er as being too radical.
During the filming of Chinese Paladin, Johnson apparently tried to push for his original ending for Ling'er but this was not adopted.

The original ending is as follow (never used):

In this version, Shi Gong Hu and the Drunken Sword Immortal survived and participated in the final battle.

Liu Jin Yuan was brain-washed right until almost the end.

As in every version, Ling Er died in the battle after slaying the water beast.

Xiaoyao lost consciousness due to wounds and at the sorrow of losing Ling Er. The wounded heroes were taken by Ah Nu and Tang Yu to safety.

Xiaoyao awaken to found Yue Ru was reanimated (as per CP game plot, not the TV version) but the ‘undead’ Yue Ru was only capable of one line of speech “Brother Xiaoyao”.

The Drunken Sword Immortal disappeared shortly after this. Ah Nu was never sure whether he is her father.

Shi Gong Hu later found and freed the real witch king (as per CP game) and restored him to the throne.

Tang Yu and Ah Nu left the nation of Nan Zhao together.

One night three months after the passing of Ling Er, she appeared in Xiaoyao’s dream. Ling Er told Xiaoyao the god emperor has summoned her and she has to take her place in the heavens. She bid Xiaoyao farewell and request him to take good care of their daughter.

Xiaoyao couldn’t bear to be separate with Ling Er and pleaded her to come back to him…

Xiaoyao is awaken from the dream, and saw Yue Ru standing in front of him. She smiled at him gently and told him that she is not going away anymore; that she will never leave him. Xiaoyao’s feelings and eyes told him that Yue Ru is actually Ling Er. He couldn’t be sure what is real and what is not…

THE END

Wan Mei's Explanation:
Johnson Yau’s ending is to restore his original intended ending for the series - that is Ling Er’s spirit has returned and dwell in the physical body of Yue Ru (which was without a spirit before) to be together with Xiaoyao and their daughter.

In some ending of the CP1 game, where Xiaoyao saw Yue Ru with the baby, it can have the same interpretation – that Ling Er has come back in Yue Ru’s body. The plotline in CP2 can be made non-canonical by this revelation.

Johnson and Marty’s continue failing out would eventually ruined CP2.

Interestingly, Johnson Yau had several failed relationships with different women before finally married on Oct 2004 – after the completion of the Chinese Paladin TV series. He was quoted as saying "I have finally found the Ling’er of my life." :)

well... if Marty Hsieh is YR fan then he shouldn't have altered some parts about YR in a less favorable way in NewPAL XP (especially that "the three of us will never be apart" part) :D

it seems to be more reasonable that the reason of their falling out and the poor quality of PAL2 is all about money and egos, and partially due to Softstar's bad management style, rather than the popular LTD flame wars.

btw, according to the earlier drafts of the game, the earlier planned ending is like this:
LE apperantly died after the Final Boss Fight. However, as the main hero returned to the first village, he found a girl which looked VERY similar to Ling'er in his aunt's inn (it didn't say whether she is LE or not, it depends upon your interpretion :) ), and his aunt also wanted to be their matchmaker
It's an interesting read, but I'm quite confused about some of the things you've said.

Can I clarify this is what you meant?

* Game CP's ending is influenced by Johnson Yau (pro-Linger)- about Xiao Yao returning and seeing Yue Ru "alive".

* For Drama CP- Marty Hsieh (pro-Yueru) won it so YueRu doesn't appear again??

or are u just trying to say Johnson vs. Marty was jsut deciding who's was the mother of XiaoYao's baby?

*Johnson's idea for the ending was YueRu's body being taken over by LingEr's spirit and this wasn't used in the Drama or TV Drama

The CP game ending wasn't influenced by Johnson Yau (pro-Linger)- that's the ending he wanted but was dismissed, so he also tried to have it in the drama, without success.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying? Marty was pro-YR, but this was for the game. I'm don't think he/she took part in the drama.

That seems to be the case.

some more history about PAL2:

After the success of PAL1, the development of PAL2 has been planned since 1997, by the same team as PAL1 (known as the "Crazy Boyz" group). However, after several scripts had been written, Johnson Yau was always not quite satisfied, as he wanted PAL2 to be of the same quality as FF7 and Tekken 3. Later Johnson went to the China Mainland and become the management of Softstar's Beijing Division (which is now supposed to be making PAL5 :) ). Johnson Yau also opened another division in Shanghai (which is actually a division of the Beijing Division), which continued the development of PAL2. However, Marty Hsieh's team is also working on PAL2 in the Softstar HQ in Taiwan, and he's a little earlier than Johnson Yau to have his plan approved. Johnson was quite disappointed about the approvement of Marty's plan, and complained to the management of Softstar HQ, claimed that Marty already had his own successful game "Pi Li Qi Xia Zhuan" and should not be in charge of PAL series. Later in February 2002, Marty quitted Softstar for some reasons, left the work of PAL2 undone. The work of PAL2 is continued by the DOMO group in a very limited time (which lead to the game's poor quality), with the assistant of Johnson Yau, and that "PAL2" planned by Softstar's Shanghai Division eventually became PAL3.

I disagree with what you said. Marty Hsieh is Yueru fan... this is accepted by everyone. Watch the New Pal trailer made by his team. See how many times Yueru appears? A lot. And Ling'er? Not even once!

Here's the trailer in case anyone hasn't seen

As for the "the three of us will never be apart" part, well, it is possible that Hsieh was pressured by others to change that, so the game does not promote polygamy.
