WOW, I am glad that someone is actually doing this stuff, I wish u guys the best, once you've done translating the whole game i will introduce this game to my Australian friends at school hahaha, I've been talking about this game to them for a while now so they are pretty curious about it, This is because i exaggerate alot about how good this game is, (but seriously this game is the best) in order to get them to play. It's something that you can't miss out。anyway good luck with your project if you guys are still alive!

How much are you guys capable of altering the game?

Is it possible to simply skip the maze sections of the games? I would love have my friends who can't read Chinese to experience the story of this game, but them being whitewashed as they are I doubt they'll be able to get through the mazes without raging and quit on me.

Being able to alter the mazes would be a good thing, but so far I have no idea how to do that... it could happen in the future.

All I'm thinking of is, the game is programmed to have different maps all pieced together. IE you walk out on this map the game will connect you to the other map and so on and so forth.

So I'm thinking, instead of connecting the stair entrance into the Undead General's grave to the actual grave maze, you connect it with the map with the General's coffin.

So instead of:
Stair entrance -> Maze -> Stair inside maze -> Coffin room

You connect
Stair entrance -> Coffin room.

You are not removing codes or adding code, but rather more like reattaching the connectors.

Now that I've looked into it, yes, what you said can be done, totally. This is one example where the middle section can be skipped completely without affecting the story. Are there any other examples?

Getting rid of every maze is a bad idea from a game-play point of view, because you woudn't get enough experience to face the next boss.

Oh right I never considered grinding monsters because I always played the game with editor.

But yeah I'd think the zombie general maze HAS to be skipped for me, even though when I first played it at 10 I never once beat it because I got scared, so I downloaded a save file, beat the general then fall down into blood pool and I couldn't beat that one as well because it was disgusting and scary.

Now I JUST beat the game again today 10 minutes ago at age of 20, the General maze while nowhere near as scary now I beat it within minutes and was surprised at myself (I imagined it to be much harder like those people on Baidu said they were stuck there for 3 days, but then again, 10 more years of Video Game Experience must've helped), but still it was still a hassle and it was DEFINITELY NOT FUN. The blood pool too I beat it, but once again not fun.

I can say the same about the Ghost mountain + Ghost plateau neither of those were fun either.

Rest of the ones in the game are alright, they aren't TERRIBLE but I'd say I'm not enjoying the game with the mazes + the stupid monsters, I know it'll be really short if they were taken out but to me the story is what makes the game good, gameplay wise, not really.

I can totally relate with you. I played the game as a kid and dreaded that part with the General tomb. 10 years later it isn't as bad as I saw back then, but the mazes(having a good memory of which path you took helps a lot) were torture! It wasn't just the mazes but the constant and continuous battles. Then sooner or later I forget where I was, so I backtrack but the monsters come back. Truth be told, this was the first hard maze I encountered in the game because I kept getting a nagging feeling I missed some treasure chests since I tried to collect every single treasure. It is true though that you need to grind in order to gain enough levels to beat the bosses. I agree with Lightbrand that the story is what makes the game good. Music is good too. It's just sometimes the countless battles get tiring and repetitive.

Anyway, getting back to the LSF English Translation Project, I noticed that there hasn't been any updates since June. I recently just beat the 95 version for the first time and have been craving for more of PAL and the cast. The 10 second ending just didn't cut it for me...

NOT a good idea.
What about the people who simply want to experience the original game without ANY edits?
You can simply download an editor (they're everywhere) and edit the coordinates of your characters for that you know.

To the editors: PLEASE preserve ALL the contents of the original game! If you want to change anything please make it only an option! For example the iPhone version of Xianjian had an optional mode where lots of contents are skipped, thank god it was only an OPTION!
Can't wait for this to be released.

Or he can post the alternative files where once you replace them in your game folder the mazes can be skipped.

Last time I played (recently) I honestly kept a save file at every maze ending. JUST so I can show to my friends the story without having to have them sit through me walking the maze and get bored.

We use the screen sharing thing on Skype so I can play and he can watch and listen to what's going on. By the way, if you want to do the maze legit, buy tons of demon sprays so you can avoid the fights if you don't want to fight them.

Like I'm telling you the mazes are NOT fun. Especially the ones that got beefed up from the 98 version. They are simply there to extend the game, that is a fact, and it's a shame that Chinese RPG has to resort to that. What Golden Sun did with their "mazes" I thought was good. They extend gametime but at least they are somewhat fun.

Mazes in XJ you lose out on NOTHING when you skip them, except maybe 20minutes of your life and couple of levels. You feel zero accomplishment after finishing them.

Yes I played the games many times, it doesn't feel complete without the mazes. In fact the at least 75% of the game are mazes. Taking out the mazes would leave a hollow shell. Like I said, make it an option or alternate game mode. If you don't like mazes that's fine, but I'm sure lots of people like me would prefer the entire original game.
Anyways does anyone know how to translate the files? Which file am I supposed to open to translate spells and items?

Darn this summer is awful for me. Project is not dead, just need some more time.

GItems.dat, GMagics.dat Those are the files for items and spells.

Well, if someone prefers the "entirely original game", why not just play the Chinese version? When translated into English, it won't be original anymore. In fact, the sentences must be changed to reflect the English way of speaking, or you'll just get a Chinglish game...

Hey Rich, though I can't help you much with the translation, is it possible for me to get access to editing the wiki? I'd like to fix some typos you've made in some of the dialogues :D
Cheers

Hi Rich,

I was curious about the progress of the translation project. I would be very glad to join this project if there is anything I could do. Thanks!

Best,
Lei

Hi all,

I'm back. The project is not dead as I promised though it did take a while... I've updated the project website with works in progress as well as the translation tool for download: https://sites.google.com/site/fairyswordinfo/

The tool is what I use to translate the dialogue texts in game into English. Now anyone can use the tool to make their own translations! I'll be working on the translations myself in the next while, but feel free to download my translated files and edit them however you want. I've posted details on the website.
